Stratex Networks Velox LE Wireless Transmission Solves Broadcast Interruption Problems for North Carolina Public Safety Network

SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Stratex Networks, Inc. , one of the world's leading providers of wireless transmission solutions, today announced the completion of a wireless emergency communications system for Avery County 911 Communications, Newland, NC. The license-exempt radio based system, installed and managed by High Country Communications (HCC), has eliminated broadcast interruption problems encountered by the Agency's previous system.

The agency's original simulcast emergency network used leased T1 transmission lines. Initially delays through the leased circuits were predictable and the network performed well. But over time, delays changed as the wire line provider groomed the circuits for more efficient network operation. In a typical T1 application, the route a leased line takes is transparent to the user. But for this emergency system, changing the route varied delays and was problematic for maintaining performance of the radio simulcast network.

The network covers all emergency medical services, rescue squads, fire, sheriff's, and police departments in a 1000 square mile area that encompasses some of the most mountainous terrain east of the Mississippi. The transmission system is based on Stratex Networks Velox LE platform with links ranging from eight to twelve miles. The Velox LE radios operate in the license-exempt 5.8 GHz band, and the transmission capacity is software upgradeable.

"Point to point microwave radios were well suited for solving the delay problems associated with leased lines," according to Chris Bertolini, President of High Country Communications. "Installation costs were low because the radios were essentially plug and play," Bertolini said. The integrated spectrum analyzer of the Stratex Velox radio aided channel selection and allowed HCC to check the communication path for possible interference prior to final installation.

Bertolini listed several other advantages to the wireless transmission network. "Operating costs are lower now, we have a constant delay path and a problem-free simulcast network, additional connections at no incremental cost; interference free transmissions, and, very important to us, full ownership control."
